Switzerland
has many famous and spectacular railway lines, but it was hardly ever considered as a destination for
steam. Too early was the
electrification of the major lines, which started in the early twenties
of the last century. The last federal railway steam engines got retired
already already in 1968, a time when other railroads in Europe still used them
widely.
Today,
there are a couple of railroads in the country that run steam trains during
summer season on and off, and a few preserved lines regularly. The
federal railway 'SBB' has a remarkable collection of historic
locomotives and trains
from the steam era, but they run them only infrequently.
So why
did I cover Switzerland in the Steam Section?
To some extent, because
it is my home country, and because it is what
is
running
here.
Preserved steam is what remains these days, with the last destinations as
Cuba, China and eastern Europe virtually gone.
Another
reason is the big variety of engines
preserved, ranging from compound, standard-, narrow
gauge rack gear- and adhesion engines.
Many of
these steam-trains run through scenic regions that have managed
to preserve their charm and ambient, pass mountain sceneries
and villages
that
kept its distinct character up to the
present days.
Apart
the famous "Rhaetian Railways" and the federal SBB are
there other,
little known narrow gauge and secondary lines off the "beaten track" that run fine steam trains from time to
time.
And that's what I would like to present you here.
