With a trainset from 1930, A 3/5 hustles through the Thur valley towards Lake of Constance. July 17, 2010

Mit dem "Schnellzug 1930" rauschte die A 3/5 am 17.Juli 2010 durchs Thurtal Richtung Bodensee. Die Aufnahme entstnad bei Bürglen.

The celebration 125 years Gotthard-Railway brought A3/5 705 and C 5/6 2978 on a trip all the way from Basel to Bellinzona. On May 31, 2007, the first section Basel - Brugg - Rotkreuz - Erstfeld of the two-day-trip was made. The picture  taken at Frick shows the double climbing the lengthy 12-Promille grade towards the Bötzberg-Tunnel. More about the anniversary here..

Switzerland - A country for steam?

Switzerland has many famous and spectacular railway lines, but it was hardly ever considered as a destination for steam. Too early was the electrification of the major lines, which started in the early twenties of the last century. The last federal railway steam engines got retired already already in 1968, a time when other railroads in Europe still used them widely.

Today, there are a couple of railroads in the country that run steam trains during summer season on and off, and a few preserved lines regularly. The federal railway 'SBB' has a remarkable collection of historic locomotives and trains from the steam era, but they run them only infrequently.

So why did I cover Switzerland in the Steam Section?

To some extent, because it is my home country, and because it is what is running here. Preserved steam is what remains these days, with the last destinations as Cuba, China and eastern Europe virtually gone.

Another reason is the big variety of engines preserved, ranging from compound, standard-, narrow gauge rack gear- and adhesion engines.

Many of these steam-trains run through scenic regions that have managed to preserve their charm and ambient, pass mountain sceneries and villages that kept its distinct character up to the present days.

Apart the famous "Rhaetian Railways" and the federal  SBB are there other, little known narrow gauge and secondary lines off the "beaten track" that run fine steam trains from time to time.

And that's what I would like to  present you here.

So enjoy these pictures and learn more about Swiss Steam !

The Bauma-Hinwil museum-line is certainly one of the most scenic ones in Switzerland, but also the neigbouring lines feature interesting spots. On October 13, 2007, the former Regional Saignelegier-Glovelier 2-6-0 tank engine was taken near Fischenthal on the SBB-Line Bauma-Wald.

The Esslingen built Railcar CZm 1/2 ist one of the few such items that have survived and together with the Czech 'Komarek'-Railcar, it is the only operational one in Europe. On Setember 23, 2007, it passed Dättwil on the way to a steam event in Triengen. The spreading vegetation of the garden on the first track is evidence that regular passenger service has been cancelled years ago on the this stretch of the old Nationalbahn-Line.
